🎶 The Art of Listening: Bordeaux, Jazz, and the Body in Motion

🎶 The Art of Listening: Bordeaux, Jazz, and the Body in Motion

By Dre – Music Selector & Playlist Curator, LmLw Radio

Let’s talk about listening.
Not just hearing—but listening.

Listening is an art. It’s what happens when the world slows down just enough for a bassline to slide into your bones or a trumpet solo to wake something sleeping inside you. It’s the same moment when a wine hits your palate and you think, wait—what is THAT?! That’s not just fruit. That’s a feeling.

At LmLw Radio, I curate music not to fill silence, but to pair with your senses. To vibe with what’s in your glass. Lately, I’ve been living in the pocket where Bordeaux wines meet Jazz and R&B—and let me tell you, the connection is real.

🎷 What Our Ears Sip When They Listen

Think about the places we go to really hear music: a candlelit bar, a cozy listening lounge, a late-night drive, or your own kitchen with speakers turned up just enough to drown out the world.

Then think about how your body reacts. A Stevie Wonder chord progression? Shoulders drop. A Coltrane solo? Eyes close. An Anita Baker run? Instant goosebumps. Music doesn’t just hit your ears—it travels. Through you. Now, let’s pour a glass.

🍷 Bordeaux: Notes in a Bottle

Bordeaux wine—whether red, white, or rosé—is layered. Just like a D’Angelo arrangement or a Miles Davis session. You’ve got structure (like drums), acidity (like horns), body (like bass), and texture (like harmony).

A Left Bank Bordeaux—Cabernet Sauvignon heavy—hits like a solid R&B groove: bold, deep, sometimes moody, always smooth.
A Right Bank Bordeaux, often led by Merlot, feels softer, rounder, more emotionally open. That’s the wine you pair with late-night Jazz: delicate piano work, warm vocals, a hint of smoke.

🔁 Pairings That Make Sense (and Move You)

Cabernet Sauvignon + Classic R&B → Marvin Gaye or Sade. Structured, confident, sensual. Médoc + 'Let’s Get It On' = 🔥

Merlot-Based Blends + Soulful Jazz → Bill Evans and a Pomerol. Soft tannins, soft touch.

White Bordeaux + Modern R&B → Sauvignon Blanc/Sémillon with H.E.R. or Daniel Caesar. Crisp highs, clean emotion.

Bordeaux Supérieur + Neo-Soul → Rustic and real with Erykah Badu or D’Angelo.

🕺 Why Does Music Make You Move?

Because it speaks the language of rhythm—just like a great wine speaks the language of time and place. We move because we’re human. We dance because music gives us permission. And the right wine? It amplifies that permission.

You swirl your glass. You lean back. The track hits. The tannins hit. Something happens.

You feel. You listen.

💬 Final Pour

Jazz and R&B aren’t the only genres that vibe with Bordeaux, but they do something special when paired. They both hold space for complexity. For emotion. For groove. For pause.

So no—this isn’t about being fancy. It’s about being in tune.

Next time you're sipping a Bordeaux, don’t just drink. Play something that makes your head nod and your soul lean in.

Then tell me: what do you hear?
